Course Evaluation

by Writing 5 Students

Student Surveys

Most colleges conduct surveys at the end of the semester to collect opinions about the appropriateness of the course work, the quality of the instructors, and the overall value of the curriculum. You haven't been asked to evaluate our course this semester, but I'm asking you to do so now, here, where everyone can share your evaluations.

Last-Day Conversation

Ordinarily, we would have a conversation in class about these matters at our last meeting, but since that has already happened, sooner than we expected, I need to solicit your opinions here.

Don't Be Absent!

If you participate in this mandatory (required) exercise, I'll mark you "Present" for Wednesday, May 05. If you don't participate fully, I'll have to mark you "Absent." This exercise substitutes for our regular class meeting.

Grammar Counts This Time!

I've never corrected your grammar or style on a wiki assignment. I have refrained from being critical to encourage open and casual communication among classmates. I believe that has been a smart and effective policy. This time, though, because I'm giving you back more than an hour of your class time to work on this exercise, I expect good editing and correct grammar and will grade the exercise accordingly. Write your best, please.

ASSIGNMENT: Make thoughtful, respectful but critical contributions to a discussion about the positive and negative aspects of your Writing 5 experience.

TOPIC: Many topics can be discussed: 1) the difficulty level of the course, 2) the workload for assignments and homework, 3) the quality of the instruction, 4) the value of the feedback, 5) the usefulness of the textbook, 6) the effectiveness of the wiki as a teaching tool, are just some examples.

PERSPECTIVE: Write from your own perspective as honestly as you can. Speak about your own experiences if you wish, including how much time the course required and whether you think you made enough progress or got your money's worth from the course.

AUDIENCE:Your classmates and your professor.

SAMPLE FIRST SENTENCE: I knew the first day the class was going to be challenging, but I had no idea HOW challenging!

PROCEDURE: Use the Comments field below. PLEASE NUMBER your comments so we can refer to them easily to track responses to earlier comments. If we need something more formal, I'll set up a chart.

DEADLINE 11:59 PM FRI MAY 07 field You have until just before Midnight Friday to participate for full credit. By then, I'll know your Final Exam grade and I'll want to finalize your course grades to post on Web Adviser.

COMMENT 2
My evaluation is that this has been a delightful semester. You're a remarkably responsive, alert, and hard-working bunch of students it has been my privilege to assist. I love the spirit you showed in attacking the wiki assignments, and your willingness to continue submitting papers despite the volumes of criticism I heaped on your efforts. Not all of you are ready for Composition I, but you've all done good work and made good progress. I'm honored to know you and I will miss you all.

When I first walked into writing 5, I thought it would just be as similar as writing 4, but later in the course, I learned the game is played completely different here. The difficulty level can be really high for a student who doesn’t keep up with this course. As soon the student misses a class, he/she misses something really important (I am sure this is the case with all the students in their classes but here it was something extra important here). Homework wasn’t a big deal, because the professor didn’t stress about having homework but in the other hand, the homework did count as a grade. The plus point here was that professor gave out the course outline the first day of the class. This helped a lot even though it changed a bit in the middle. Instructions on the course outline were the clearest thing in this course. Professor didn’t fail to follow it until the department jumped in the middle to change the date of the final exam; otherwise the outline was followed throughout the course. As far as I know, the textbook didn’t really help me as much but the test material came out of it and some good techniques that helped when writing an essay. The second most important/useful thing in writing five was the wiki, it gave us an little opportunity to boost our grades up, a way to contact the professor, and another opportunity to learn something new beside the class materials

A great company of Professor Hodges led me through new lessons and uniquely, gave courage to understand/apply them. I am sure not only me but other fellow classmate found this class interesting and learned new techniques from Professor Hodges. Which man doesn’t go to sleep until midnight? The answer would be Mr. Hodges. He is the hardest working professor/teacher I’ve ever seen. It was an honor to be with you (Pr. Hodges) as well as the fellow classmates. Writing five will be one of the classes I will miss the most. Now the summer is here, we can’t stop moving ahead so classmates, this is a good quote to keep in our mind as we move closer to our future,”A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Become optimist, not pessimist.

Hello everyone,
One good thing, I liked about writing 5 with Prof. Hodges was that his ability to give feedback in timely manner. He was always available for giving the answers, doesn't matter what day and time of the week. I really appreciate this.
The textbook for writing 5 is a very good tool and can be used in the future as reference. Also, i have learned a lot from textbook.
I will your class Prof. Hodges. You are one of the best professer.

COMMENT 8:
How wonderful i want to say about my class, Writing V. For all of thing, this class brings our classmates a lot of experiences about writing skill although i still have mistakes about grammar skills in my essay. During this semester, I can realize that teacher tries to get us improve special skills in writing, reading, vocabulary, even grammar, such as quiz on each chapter, grammar test, wiki assignment, and homework. I know that the class of Prof. David Hodges sometimes makes our classmates feel tired because there are a lot of stuff we need to finish in a week. Indeed, I was struggling in his class almost the first half this semester. I was so nervous for the quiz, so i did not do it well. My reading skill is so bad. I have to spend almost 1 weeks to read the story in the book to make sure i understand it clearly. However, after finishing this semester, my reading comprehension is improving day by day. I can read the story faster than i used. Moreover, when I read the story to prepare for my comment on wiki, I recognize a merit that I need to do on my essay to make it more vivid as the essay of the author and learn more word to write my essay more appreciate. Prof. David Hodges create a basement for us to go next level, so I believe that they are very confident now. I am so glad to be one of your students, Prof. David Hodges.

First of all, let me say that I did a kind of summary about my classmates this semester, and I would like to share it with you. May I'm being a bit cowardly saying it from here, but you know that it would have been a bit odd and funny to say that in class. Well, I love my class! It was one of the best times that I've had as a student, and it's been thanks to you. It is shame to recognize that I don't remember the name of all my classmates, so I'll refer to you in general. I liked the way we were involved in class with comments and conversations from which I learned a lot. I'm sorry if at some point I was a bit inquisitive with some of you ( specially with the sister and the younger Indian guy who set next to me :) ), but It was curiosity to know you better. I also had a great time listening the Indian guy who was sitting behind me from I could never understand what he said, sorry! I think you talk really fast! :) I think I have a good relationship with all my classmates, and it made me improve every day. About the professor Hodges, I honestly think that he is one of the best teachers and people I met. I know that it is just asses the course, but this course was more than techniques and lessons. I learned because I was sorrounded by a comfortable atmosphere. David Hodges, I hope you continue teaching for a long time because people deserve to meet someone like you. Thank you so much everybody. Even though Wiki gave me headaches, I will miss this space too. Maria says it was WORTH IT.

To me, as a student who have participated in your class two times, what i have learned from the writing class not only English but also the method of studying. First, the professor's demanding method teaching requires me to keep absorbing new knowledge as well as reviewing the one. For example, quizzes and grammar tests are the tools encourage us to study and review more and more. Moreover, every essay's topic is a challenging ; therefore, every time I accomplish an essay is every time I improve my writing skill more. In deed, like the professor's feedback in one of my essay: "Every time you fail, you learn something new." Second, the studying style in this class gives me an experience to study other classes: a good grade is an ideal target; however, the importance is the process in which we try to improve our skills and achieve our ambition to learn new material, not grades. If we were lazy in a whole semester and we relied on our upstream swimming, we would definitely fail. Unfortunately, we would fail not only the class but also our life exams. In short, the writing 5 class gives me more than English writing skill, but the method for my studying.

like everyone, i really like our writing 5 class. one of the most creative thing that make me like our prof is the Wiki. Wiki is the place that we can discuss and share our opinion, and It also is the place that helps us to be ready before class, for instance, Prof post our assignment on the wiki, and he also post our homework there. These posts are every helpful. One more thing, That is our prof. He is such as a pretty good teacher that i have seen. The ways he teachers and corrects us are very different than the other teachers. He is a funny teacher. he never let our class boring. he always does something that make us awake and interested in his subject. David Hodges is my recommended teacher to anyone. Both thumbs David HOdges

At the beginning of this semester, I was so happy because I was beginning a new writing class. I thought the class will be a lot easier than my previous writing class but I was wrong. For all my years of schooling and attending English classes, I have not seen a class that is as tough as this. During the first day of class, my fears of failing arose as professor David listed out what we are going to do in this class. As he told us of the 10 essays we will write and the frequent quizzes, including the wiki readings and conversations, I decided to drop the class. Later, I decided to take up the challenge and I realized that it was the best decision ever. For I learnt a lot during this semester, like fragments, run on, dangling modifier, and other styles in writings in his class. Although the essays, quizzes and wiki conversations were very difficult, and although I hated and said awful things about this class, I’m glad I had Professor David as my instructor because he did prepare me properly for the challenge ahead.

Its difficult professor Hodges to discus everything regard what I learned and I got the benefits from writing 5. For me this course was challenge for the high level that we had in class. I liked the way you throw the ideas and how you planted the spirit of competition indirectly, also you revealed something that I had it was hiding, but with your spontaneous and professional way you let me discover it in my self which my writing was boring and my ideas were simple like party without music, but with you way my writing was changed I started to write by thinking deeply in the subject and i took the topic from different interesting angles, also I liked the way you talked and how you analyzed the topic that we had during the semester. Furthermore you taught me how to be optimistic no matter what. And I liked wiki assignment it was my favorite part in writing 5, I learned how to analyze and discuss topics and I shared our ideas with other student, the thing got me surprised was the speed of your feedback anytime ,really you are truly professor who I didn’t see in my life before. I had the honor to be my teacher for 15 weeks. I will miss your class a lot, thank you for everything.

COMMENT I
At first, i thought that this semester will be so easy for me because i used to take that same class last semester. I thought that everything will be the same and that i will not have to worry at all about that because last semester at writing v i did really well. But i quickly realized that i was lying to myself and that my ex teacher was way far really easy going with us. This semester in writing v was a nightmare for me and did not arrange in anything my case because i was badly sick. I had 3 other classes too and it was too though. I could not cope with all that and my sickness too. I had to drop my statistic classes to be a little bit free. I had to study for writing v because we had exams every single classes, i get home and have to go on wiki, have to do my essay and have to learn for my world civilization quiz and management class and do my project .Above all i had to deal with my sickness. I was really afraid of failing this class, but to be honest i was telling to myself that for sure i will fail because Mr. David was really harsh on us. I knew he was doing all that for us, he was preparing us for our final exam and most of all for the next class, but he was doing too much and gave us bad grades too. I was telling to myself that i will anyway do everything in my power to not letting him get to me, and do my best to pass this class.

Also, at the beginning of this class, he said that we were allowed to miss 3 classes i think, but every time i think about missing because i had something urgent to do, i just think back and say that in reality i can not because he is just like those advertisements we see in TV. How can i miss a class when i have to take an exam every single day, it is just a lie. But it was a very big challenge and hopefully, all of us will pass that class because I’m really sure that none of us will like to see him again lol, just kidding Mr. David. To be honest, i really appreciate every single thing you did for us because at the end i understood that you did all that for us, and hopefully, you will be proud of us because behind all good students is a real professor and you are one. We would not have got there without you. Thank you so much and good luck for all of you guys.

Before coming to this class I thought this will be the same as writing 4, but I was completely wrong with that my thought. It was not that easy to deal with writing 5. In writing I use to write my essay night before it’s due. But I tried that in writing 5 also, but then I and professor both know what the result was. I never did this mistake after that. I understand that after I got my grade back for the first essay that this is not writing 4. As the time was passing I understand the meaning of writing 5. Every day of the class lecture was important because on every Monday there was some essay due and every Wednesday professor use to give new topic for essay and he explained how to write that essay. So if we miss any class then we missed something really important. I think the feedback he gave was the most important thing to me. Because he explained really well that where I was wrong and where I had to make some changes. And I like the way professor stick with the outline he gave us on the first day of class. But the departmental jump from no where and change the whole outline. I don’t think so book helps us a lot, but yes all the quizzes were form the book. But the most important thing which helped me to go through this class was the feed back of the essay and the instruction which professor gave us how to write each essay. I know it was kind of hard for us in writing 5, but when we’ll get to comp1 this will help us a lot.

I told my friends that if you really want to learn something please take professor Hodges. I learned so much from him. I will miss you every time I will get my essay back now my essay won’t have all that writing all over the paper. I will miss you I never had professor like you and I don’t think so I will ever get professor like you. Once again thank you for being my teacher.

Sara, Nidhi, Mary, Tan, you're extremely kind. Rokya, I particularly like how tough you are on me! It's very refreshing and made me laugh out loud. I'm sorry about your statistics class, but, as you know, I only care how well you learn to write!

My writing 5 was the only challenging class of all the classes I was taking. In the beginning of the semester, I was well aware about what this class was going to be (very different to my former writing class, “easy-easy” no challenge. In short not a big deal “I hated that”). I had had Professor David Hodges as my teacher in Writing 3 but at that time, I did not know how lucky I was to have him as my Teacher. I passed his class with C, but I was proud of that grade because at the end, I realized that I learnt a lot and more than my friends from other writing3 class. Professor Hodges is unique, his work ethic is incomparable; he his very Professional and a Master in his course. He impacts positively my writing skills not only in my writing class, but also in my other classes such as World Civilization or psychology. We all are fortunate to have him as our Writing 5’s Teacher. No one in this class, no matter what the grade is, can say he did not learn a lot from this class. Some might not see it right now but I promise, you will realize it very soon and you will be very thankful to Professor Hodges. Dear Professor, thank a lot for all the time you spend to make us understand what writing is all about; thank for all the time you stayed awake late or woke up earlier in the morning than most of us your student to prepare new learning for us. Thanks for the sacrifice. We can not thank you enough but only God can and will give you courage and patience to continue your mission of a Great Teacher. We will miss you.

Prof Hodges is my only teacher in this semester that have never cancelled class even for one day; above all, he is my best teacher so far.

What do I say about writing 5! I found this class a very interesting. If I talk about my first day class, when I saw Mr. Hodges I taught he was very easy going teacher to have. Then I realized that he is not easy going, but yes he is a very concern about what we should learn. Everyday we had to worry about quiz in class, wiki assignments. I take this class as my learning stage, and I have learned so many stuff which I never have learned before. I was going to drop this class after half semester but I really realized this class very important stage of my life because I learned so many basic stuff. Thanks

Hi friends!! I skip level-4 because my level-3 writing teacher told me that my writing and grammar is good enough to skip level -4. I was pretty confident on that time because i have studied English in my country. When I start my writing-5 class figured it out what is my problem in writing and I felt some difficulties to continue with professor Hodges. But, professor Hodges is really an amazing teacher. He taught every lesson with clear concept and sufficient examples. He wouldn't tell the answer, but he let us to think about the answer. We have to do several things with in the due date as we all know professor Hodges do not except late submission. In consequent of this fact,we learnt punctuality.

Hi everybody. Evaluate my teacher is not a kind of thing that I was used to in my country. Since I have been studying in the USA, at the end of each semester, I am saked to evaluate my teachers. I see that as an opportunity to appreciate the teacher at his or her just value. Well, about the Writing 5 class with Professor Hodges, if I have to give a grade to the teacher on his competences, I would give an A+. I thing that he has good ways of teaching. The course materials was good enough. Although I came late couple of time I was able to follow the flows. I can't say that I was well prepared for class everyday because I was asking other student about what we have to do that day. I learned a lot about sentence structure. What I liked a lot was the responsive essays, they brought me to answer directly to people or to argue with people. I could do better in this class if I gave to it enough time. I was most preoccupated by other classes. I got bored at last about what all the other student found exciting, the wiki. At first I did like it but at the end I hated it.
Thanks again to professor Hodges for his availability for us.
Here is my email: mtfof_1@yahoo.fr I would appreciate it if you could send my final's and my overall grade to me.

I was very tough on you, I know, but I was demanding because I know how high the end-of-semester standards are and how difficult it can be to pass the Final Exam. Despite all of our hard work, eight of you did not pass the Final. I have emailed all eight of you tonight at the best email address I could find. In those emails, I provided instructions for the retest and the mandatory review sessions that must precede the retest for anyone who wishes to take one.

The rest of you will have to wait another day or two for me to post your grades on WebAdvisor. I still have your Practice Finals and your last Grammar and Style tests to grade.

As always, you may email me at any time if you have concerns.

Hi everyone!! this time we have got a assignment that we have to evaluate our course, and our feeling about the course. I can still remember my frist writing 5 class. I was so glad because I was the old student of our prefessor. Hodges. the whole writing 5 we were so busy about out home work, wiki assignment, and the class test. Our professor tried to keep us busy, and he did it. we thought when our course will be done, but now I really miss the class and professor hodges too honestly. This teacher always tries to help student such as, we had conversation with him every class day, but it wasn't his duty as a camden county college's teacher. But he did it for his students. We could get chance to discuss about our problem, and he tried to help us. That's why I respect him so much. He checked our every paper sincerely. i have learned many things from him.

Hi Writing 5!!
In my opinion, At the beginning of the course, I was struggling with the writing on any topics. But practice made me eassy writing a topic. The course teacher started with eassy going exercise and gradually he gave us more critical exercises. Now I understand the fundamental of writing an essay. Before starting this course, I used to write what comes first in my mind. I had no plan about the topic. More or less I was unstructured, unorganized and messy which made my eassy boring, repeating the same idea more than once and vague. But now before writing on any topic sentence, I usually think about the basic outline of what I really want to say that is I make a structure of the eassy in my mind and try to put information on the basic idea that will support my view. So, apparently my eassy is now more structured, concise, informative, and interesting. As a result, readers now find my eassy alluring and attractive.
Our professor hodges is an amazing person. He is very hardworking, diligent, and caring. We hardly find any professor like david hodges. He takes care any single of us. He usually starts his class with a quiz which helps us to concentrate on the subject of the class and recall the earlier class. He reads line by line and corrects any single petty mistakes. I wonder how a single person can take care so many students such thoroughly and diligently. I am really grateful to david hodges for not only what I have learned from his class but also to his sincerity and punctuality. Thank you professor hodges.
