Sleeping Your Way to the Top

by Sora Song

p. 729

The essay is all about Sleep Deprivation. Time and again, Sora Song describes the effects of not getting enough sleep, using different words each time.

The author uses at least 25 words and phrases to describe sleep, rest, or lack of sleep (sleep deprivation).

Just saying the word "sleep" doesn't count, but "a good night's sleep," and "sleep starvation" do count, because they're either familiar or unfamiliar phrases used to describe sleep.

Find and cite NO MORE THAN 5 entries per student.

I've posted the first few phrases, along with the citation technique I want you to follow.

For Example:

Paragraph 2, Line 5:

     "slumber"

Paragraph 6, Line 1:

     "perpetually underrested"

When you've identified all or most of the list, the rest of you can earn points by commenting about why an author needs so many ways to say the same thing (and to what degree the different phrases actually are the same thing, to what degree they're not).

Early Comments Score Slightly Higher

4 POINTS for competent contributions or analysis

3 POINTS for average work but good participation

2 POINTS for below average work or poor participation

1 POINT for incomprehensible or unresponsive contributions

- Paragraph 2, line 7: drowsiness
-Paragraph 3, line 1: sleep-restricted
-Paragraph 4, line 3: nodding off
-Paragraph 6, line 4: to snooze longer at night
-paragraph 6, line 5: siesta

Hello 5, I find this essay very interesting. The author Sora Sing used many words to explain the way that people slept and I took some of them.

Paragraph 1, line 7:
“Sleep is sort of like food”
Paragraph 3, line 1:
“Sleep-restricted”
Paragraph 4, line 1:
“Somnolence”
Paragraph 4, line 4:
“Micro sleep”
Paragraph 5, line 3:
“Sleep seem to accrue to the brain”
Paragraph 5, line 7:
“lack of sleep”
Paragraph 5, line 9:
“Sleep disorder”
Paragraph 2, line 7:
“baseline drowsiness “
Paragraph 4, line 5
“Falling asleep”
Paragraph 7, line 8:
“The more you give up on sleep”
Paragraph 6; line 2:
“Sleep debt “
Sora Sing used many words and phrases to explain the same thing, for purpose to deliver the message from many angles, because each person suffering with sleep from different ways, even the results is not same.

I think these such of words and phrases have their own effects. They are factors which not only attract readers interestedly but also make the essay be more vivid and convincing. Readers will get bored if they are surprised by exact the same word hundred times in an essay.

This is an impressive group! It will take a very innovative reading to find more examples than these. The rest of you will have to try something else to earn your five points.

Describe the subtle differences between these many ways to describe sleep (and sleep lack, and sleeplessness, and sleep debt) and all of its variations.

For instance, what does it mean to run a sleep debt?
What is a sleep disorder?
And so on . . . .

Hi 5!That's really an amazing essay to learn so many things about necessity of proper sleep and sleeping disorder. I guess students who are beauty conscious they already stop late night sleeping after reading the essay because sleeping helps a

a lot to every part of our body.For me sleeping disorder is having problem in sleeping in every night as chronically. People those who have sleeping disorder problem they can not concentrate in their regular work,feel sleepy all the time and feel

tired from the very beginning of the day. To overcome sleeping disorder they can run a sleep debt through making a regular routine of at least eight hours of sleep. As we read that sleeping more necessary for our brain rather our body so we

should need to have plenty of sleeps to help our brain to work smoothly.

Hi 5, this is really an interesting essay - about the issue - we all think thats fine - which really has much worse effects than we ever thought of.

The essay portrays the reality in human life in United states and the consequences of it on our health and productivity.

"There is one necessity of life most of us consistently fail to get : a good night's sleep" - exactly defines the sleep lack and need to have a proper night-time sleep.

"Sleep is of like food" - just explains the necessity of night sleep and its role in maintaining our health.

Always lookout of micro-sleep, a sure sigh of sleep deprivation.

Never get debt on sleep again- the author also explains the ways to pay back your sleep debt.

Sleep- a state of rest to both body and brain/mind.
Sleep Lack- a habit to escape from sleep / or deprived of it.
Sleeplessness- a chronic behavior of lack of sleep.
Sleep debt - explains the ways to overcome the ill-habit and helps to correct your body back to healthy life-style.
Somnolence - a state of drowsiness and laziness due to lack of night time sleep.
underrested- not having proper duration of peace to brain.

hi 5,this essay is really interesting in the way it describes the consequences of not getting enough sleep.
Sleep is the natural period of rest for the mind and body.But when we lack sleep, we fail to get enough sleep that our body or mind need to function normally. So this can lead to sleeplessness , which is the absence of sleep......

Hi everyone, this is a good and interesting essay to read. I learned a lot about the role of a good night"s sleep in our life.Before reading this essay i never woried about my sleep time in a day,but this essay made me think about my schedule. As Robert Stickgold mentioned in para 1 "sleep is sort of like food" sleep is the food of our mind.When we sleep our mind is at complete rest. A healthy mind is needed for a healthy body.In today"s world life is so fast that people are unknowingly lacking in a good night sleep.Now i think that even i am not taking the required eight hours of sleep in a day.Going to college, taking care of my family, my son and doing the homework assignments the time run"s so fast that at the end of the day there is not enough time to sleep.From now on i will try to workout through the busy schedule to get enough time in spare to get "a good night sleep"

to run a sleep debt is like accumulating a lot of lack of sleep.
it is like , according to the book"adult should sleep 8hours at night",
and that adult sleep on 4 hours every nights may be for a few months,
that adult then have a debt of sleep because in stead of 8 he slept only 4 and still own her sleep 4 hours.

Hey Professor Hodges,
The author has used diverse point of views via using different language of sleeping. Author is just trying to get a point across that sleep is needed in our life in any given situation. If we don’t get after certain time, our brain doesn’t operate as it should. The outcomes can be as simple as getting mad at everyone. Person is better off handing in the work late then doing it when he/she should be sleeping.

When authors say in Paragraph 6, Line 5: “squeeze in a midday nap", he tells us that night is the only time when one can retrieve a full sleep. But after psychologist’s research, if need at any circumstances, good time to take a nap is in the afternoon around 3-PM.

When author says in Paragraph 8, Line 1:"mental sharpness", it simply means, sleep is a sharpener for the brain just like how pencil sharpener is for pencil. When our brain gets sharpens up, we actually can learn, and imbibe the information better because it’s like a blank slate.

(continued in the next comment...)

Neel Patel said

When author says in Paragraph 1, Line 7:"sleep is sort of like food", he’s comparing the amount of food with the needed sleep needed in a regular human being. He tells us how cruel it would be to have a person starve without food, but person without sleep is even more brutal. He thinks of sleep as nutrition that fulfills our body’s needs. If one fails to receive enough nutrition, then the body will result in some sort of negative effect, not getting enough sleep can cause similarly the negative effects.

Author says in Paragraph 6, line 3: “take your mom’s advice, and go to bed early.” What author is trying to say here is, there are reminder such as family member, who alerts us about getting enough sleep, but we ignore them and continue doing our own things. We are better off from applying their free advice. “Doing work in early morning is better than doing work at late night.” (A scientific proven phenomenon)

When author says in Paragraph 6; line 2: “Sleep debt “, just like how we pay off the credit card debt, sleep debt can be solved the same way. If it’s necessary to pull off an all night paper, do so, but next day, make some you make some arrangements to get that enough sleep you missed.

Basically, author creates an atmosphere of wanting and needing of sleep.

According to the article"Sleeping Your Way to the Top" ,an adult needs eight hours of sleep a night. If a person doesn't get enough sleep for a prolonged period of time, he or she experiences "sleep starvation" or "sleep lack" which impair the ability to function effectively. This is the way of accruing a" sleep debt." It seems to that sleep debt is a serious stage that could lead to a "sleep disorder." When a sleep disorder occures, someone is not able to sleep well. In some cases, illnes or incorrect sleep habit may be a cause for it. Also, "sleeplessness" is a state when one is unable to sleep for whatever reason.

Hi 5. I don't have much more to argue, but I found something in the essay that I'm not agree at all. It is true that the recommendation time to sleep is around 8 hours per day, but it is also true that every indidual person needs each own time to rest. Because each of us are different, we differ about the time of sleeping. Some people need eight hours whereas others just six feeling tired if they sleep more. About the siesta, in my country we usually sleep 15 minutes or 20 because some researches said this is a requierment time to rest and feel good agin. For me this is the time I need to recover energy. Also, there are other people who push themselves to sleep just a bit as the essay said. It is a great problem because of the bad consequences like a sleep disorder or lack of sleep they will have in the future.

There is always a time for every thing, and one of them is a time to sleep.
This is really an eye opening because most people even student like me, don't even bother about good night sleep. we prefer to get things done, even if it takes us to the next day. Even according to this essay, "a good night sleep helps our brain, makes us mentally alert, improve our mood" and i also know that a good sleep, helps in fixing any metabolic disorder in the body.
In my own case, sleep is my worst nightmare, although it's neccessary but i feel it's best to sleep in the day than at night. Frankly, i know my reasoning is really wrong, so i'll make sure that i always have my good night sleep, so that i can be mentally alert.

The phrase used to describe sleep in this essay are mostly the words my mum always tell me.
paragraph 1, line 7
"sleep is sort of like food"
paragraph 5, line11;
"the ability to sleep does"
paragraph 1 line 3;
"a good night sleep"
paragraph 4, line 4
"microsleep"
paragraph 2, line 7;
"drowsiness"
paragraph 3, line 1;
"sleep-restricted"
paragraph 4, line 3;
"nodding off"
paragraph 6, line 2;
"sleep debt"
paragraph 6, line 5;
"siesta"
paragraph 6, line 7;
"sleep disorders"
paragraph 6, line 8;
"over sleeping"
paragraph 7, line 4;
"bedtime"
paragraph 7 line 5;
"nightly dose"
paragraph 6, line 5;
"midday nap"

I think there are many reasons why the writer used dfferent words to descibe sleep such as ,avoiding repetition of words,to attract the readers interest moreover the passage is a song. In songs there's always a lot of simile, metaphor and rythms. The use of simile, metaphor and rythms makes the work of a song writer to look interesting. Sleeping disorder is a lack of order or regulation in sleeping which can disturb the normal physical or mental health. The writer made mention of timothy roehrs,director of research at the sleep diorders, who advises against oversleeping. Sleep debt means owing some hours of sleep. According to the writer in paragraph 6, she said " IF you 're one of the otherwise health yet perpeyually underrrested, there's plenty you can do to pay back your sleep debt.

this essay is about what we actually face in real life. we all have to suffer form this time in our life. In this essay author has just talked about Americans, but i have seen people in India too working hard, but not getting enough sleep. This makes people mentally sick and depress. So this is really common in our lives. But the problem is that we don't care about this and we just ignore this fact.

in paragraph i it says" Sleep is sort of like food" by this statement author is trying to compare food and sleep together. we know how important food in humans life, but we don't know how important food is in our lives. by comparing this together author is trying tell us the importance of sleep in our lives.

in paragraph 3 " The human brain is only capable of about 16 hours of wakefulness" by giving this quote author is trying to tell us the scientific reason and telling us that our brain have capability for working only 16 hr a day, probably many of us know this fact, but still ignore and work more then that is gives us only negative effect on our body.

nidhi said

in paragraph 6 author is giving an advice that we should of take our mom's advice and follow that and we should go to bad early because when were children we watch cartoons and other tv shows until late night and when we have to get up early in the morning it's hard for us and even we don't feel fresh after getting up from bed.

in paragraph 7 " You have to realize that if you get a good night's sleep, you will actually be more efficient and get more done the next day. The more you give up on sleep, the harder it is to be productive" in this quote author is giving the fact about what can happen if we don't get enough sleep at night and the positive effect of getting good sleep at night.

So in this essay author is giving us all the positive and negative facts of getting sleep at night. Author is giving scientific reasons,and by giving facts of not getting enough sleep so now we should understand the meaning of getting enough sleep at night and try to get sound sleep at night.

This essay is really good for people who loves to wake until midnight and not getting enough sleep. That people should stared getting better sleep at night .

The article " sleeping your way to the top" is a wonderful essay, the author used many words to describe the word "SLEEP'' like paragraph 2 line 7 "Drawsiness"
paragraph 4 line 1 "Somnolence"
paragraph 4 line 3 "Nodding"
paragraph 6 line1 "Perpetually underested"
paragraph 6 line 4 "Snooze"
paragraph 6 line 5 " Nap"
paragraph 6 line 5 "Siesta"
i think the reason why the author used many phrases to describe sleep is because, she want everybody to be familiar with what she is saying about "sleep". like in my country we are not familiar with the word "nap'', we are using the word " siestar" and we regard it as afternoon sleep.

I found this story very intersting. i think this story title is very true i mean its fact, but its all depend on people's opnion how they take it. i think author found really good way to compare sleeping with diffrent thing trying to give good understanding of it.

In paragraph 1: the authour compared sleeping with food. '' sleep is sort of like food''. by this sentence authour is giving us really good example, she is comaparing food and sleep toghter and food is our need we cant live with food for long time, i think as my point of view i think sleeping is same need for me, if i cant sleep i go to depression, and u couldnt talk properly talk with people. and u always get mad with people.

In paragraph 1 : '' sleep starvation'' by saying the the authour is saying that sleep is one of our need for day, and it neccary u get enough to be active.
In paragarph 5 : '' sleep seem to accrue to the brain'' its trying to say is it all depend on howmuch sleep you get during day. it does effect on you brain if you didnt sleep well, and
you can be able to make decision propely.

In paragarph 5: " the need for sleep does not change a lot with age''. it mean that its all up on the activity you do during the day, its not depend on you age, if you working then you do need sleep for certin time of hours. so its not up on age.

In paragraph 6: the authour said '' take mom advice, go to bed early'' she is trying to say that we teenager dont listen to them and just ingonore what they are saying. we just do we feel like to do, but by saying that they are alreting us. my garnd pa always advice me 'sleep early wake up early'.

First one, the author is going to talk about the sleep' role. It is very important in our life after have done a long day. That is vivid to use different word to describe meaning of sleeps.Such as , at the top story, the author definite the good night's sleep is very important, so every body has to be need enough 8 hours for each night. But nobody is living on the edge of sleep starvation.
Instead of using the word " sleep starvation " or " lack of sleep", the author is changing the word in paragraph 2 , line 1 : if people still stay sleep deprived , they won't like to do anything and no more notice in working.
In paragraph 2, line 5: people have a slumber only 4, 5 or 8 hours for 2 weeks, people will fall into baseline drowsiness by day 4 of the first week. Drowsiness is the situation of the lack of sleep.
Moreover, in the paragraph 4, line 1 : one affection of lack of sleep is somnolence. Also in paragraph 4, line 5: The author uses the word " microsleep" to describe the lack of sleep.

hi 5, like I was saying, when we do not get enough sleep our mind and body do not rest. so, we experience sleeplessness which can disturb our health. sleep debt is when we miss our "ration" of sleep ( 8 hours/ night). if we do not "pay" our sleep debt we will suffer to sleep disorder. sleep disorder like his name indicates is the disorder on our sleep such as snoring or breathing difficulties while sleeping.

I like this essay because the author used a lot of different words to explain the topic. This is essay is a good example of how to write an essay by findig many ways to explain the main idea. I am agree with this article because it is true that adults and teeneger should sleep their hours. In america it is commun, but not just america it is happening in many parts of the world. Adults have more extress and teenagers go to school without energy. This article explain what time and how many hours is good to sleep well. This essay also talks about the causes of why pople do not sleep enough.
